The 2003 Beveridge Lecture will take place at the Royal Statistical Society on Wednesday 7 May at 5pm.
The 2003 lecturer is Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Director of the International Centre and Society at University College London
The title of his lecture is 'Social Inequalities in Health'.
Abstract:
At the time of the Beveridge Report, poverty and health were closely linked. The material conditions of the poor in Britain today are vastly different from those obtaining in the first half of the 20th century. The problem of inequalities in health has, however, not gone away. We need to orientate our thinking away from a sole concentration on ill health among the poor to focus on the social gradient in mortality and morbidity that runs from the top to the bottom of society. This social gradient can be linked clearly to social conditions. Attention to the causes of health inequalities will produce a society with greater levels of well-being for all. Recent evidence suggests that we may soon have the possibility of achieving this.
Entry to the lecture is by free ticket. To apply for a ticket please contact Jo Hawkins at the RSS ([log in to unmask]) - please indicate whether you are an RSS fellow.
