Bristol, Shipman and Clinical Governance - Shewhart's forgotten lessons
During the last century, manufacturing industry has achieved great
success in improving quality of its products. A critical factor in this
success story has been the use of Walter A Shewhart's pioneering
(c1920's) work in the economic control of variation, which culminated
in the development of a simple yet powerful graphical method known as
the control chart. The control chart, classifies variation as common or
special cause and thus guides the user to the most appropriate action
to effect improvement. Using several case studies, including Bristol
and Shipman, this seminar will argue for the adoption of Shewhart's
approach in turning the rhetoric of clinical governance into a reality.

Analysis of Means Applied to Clinical Outcomes
Some recent approaches to the statistical analysis and graphical
display of published clinical outcomes are described. The relationship
of these to existing statistical procedures is explained, and the
application of the analysis of means statistical process control model
to identify special cause variation is demonstrated. The use of this
method of presentation of data on clinical outcomes is recommended.
Please note that the Group's AGM will also be held at this meeting. If
