Re: Graduate Training Programme in Theoretical Statistics
and Applied Probability
The Graduate Training Programme (GTP) is a joint venture
supported by EPSRC, ESRC and the Royal Statistical Society,
whose purpose is to strengthen the mathematical foundations
of tomorrow's statistical researchers. It is aimed primarily
at first and second year PhD students in statistics and related
disciplines. The GTP runs week-long residential courses, each
consisting of two modules, given concurrently.
The GTP is offering two one-week courses in 2003, one at the
University of Lancaster and the other at the University of
Nottingham.
Lancaster Course, July 20-25, 2003
----------------------------------
"Understanding MCMC"
Lecturers: Gareth Roberts and Jeff Rosenthal
"Theory and Inference for Extremes"
Lecturers: Jonathan Tawn and Jan Heffernan
Nottingham Course, September 14-19, 2003
----------------------------------------
"Coupling"
Lecturer: Wilfrid Kendall
"Bayesian Statistics"
Lecturer: Tony O'Hagan
Further details, including information about how to
apply for a place, may be found at
http://www.rss.org.uk/GTP/index.html
and in the April 2003 edition of RSS News.
There is funding available from the EPSRC to support 30
subsidised places per course. Priority for these funded
places will be given to EPSRC supported students but
anyone registered for a PhD in statistics within the UK
may apply. There may also be available (subject to approval
of a funding bid) up to 6 additional funded places per
course for PhD students on topics within the remit of the
ESRC, with priority given to ESRC supported students.
Students with a funded place will only be required to meet
their own travel costs and a registration fee of 120 pounds
per course. The cost of non-funded places (covering registration,
accommodation and meals) will be 450 pounds per course.
Applications should be sent to Paul Gentry by email to
