Department of Statistics, University of Glasgow
Earmarked funded PhD Studentships available in
2003
Three funded PhD studentships are available in the
Department of Statistics, University of Glasgow
commencing in October 2003. The Department has an
excellent research record and a large and active
group of postgraduate research students, see
http://www.stats.gla.ac.uk / for general
background. These studentships are open to UK
applicants (more precisely, to those with a
"relevant connection" with the UK, usually three
years' residence that is not solely for
educational purposes). Current EPSRC guidelines
are that other EU applicants may apply for a
"fees-only" award.
Studentship 1: Department of Statistics EPSRC DTA
studentship.
The Department of Statistics is able to offer one
EPSRC funded studentship available for October
2003 in any area of Statistics.
Research projects are available in the many
fundamental and applied topics including:
Analysis of images and spatial patterns, Neural
networks, Biostatistics including Bioinformatics
and Veterinary Animal Welfare, Environmetrics,
Experimental design and optimisation,
Nonparametric modelling, Markov Chain Monte Carlo.
Studentship 2: Statistics for environmental
modelling
Supervisors: Ron Smith (Centre for Ecology and
Hydrology Edinburgh), Marian Scott (Dept of
Statistics, University of Glasgow)
Changes in the environment are always complex with
many processes interacting with each other. The
statistical developments of model-measurement
assessment, sensitivity analysis and assessment of
model predictive uncertainty will build on
spatial-temporal statistical models. The possible
approaches for these methodological developments
will be reviewed and will include model emulators,
GLUE procedures and Bayesian uncertainty analyses.
Enquiries for studentships 1 and 2 may be made to
the PhD Admissions Tutor, Prof E M Scott
(marian@stats.gla..ac.uk; tel. 0141 330 5125).
Further information on projects and opportunities
can be obtained from [log in to unmask] or
by phoning 0141 330 5024 (fax 0141 330 4814) and
from www.stats.gla.ac.uk.
Studentship 3: Modelling climate impacts on water
quality
Supervisors: Laurence Carvalho and Ron Smith
(Centre for Ecology and Hydrology Edinburgh),
Marian Scott, Adrian Bowman and Colin Adams (Dept
of Statistics and Dept of Evolutionary and
Environmental Biology, University of Glasgow)
The impact of climate change on freshwater
resources and its interaction with nutrient
enrichment, or ecological restoration measures, is
not well understood. Our understanding can be
improved through the statistical analysis of
detailed long-term environmental datasets. One of
the longest and most extensive of such datasets is
that from Loch Leven which has been monitored on a
weekly/fortnightly basis since 1968. The dataset
is particularly complex involving over 150
physical, chemical and biological parameters.
If you are interested in applying for this
studentship, then please send a CV and contact
details for two referees by 2 May 2003 to Dr
Laurence Carvalho, [log in to unmask], (Tel. 0131 445
4343)
