The planning of BEYOND THE FORMULA
Statistics Conference for summer 2003 has begun.
Initial plans:
Date: Thursday and Friday, July 24 & 25, 2002
Place:
Monroe Community College – Damon City Campus, Rochester, NY
Title:
“Constantly Improving Introductory Statistics: The Role of Technology”
Theme:
As expressed in 2 different recent presentations:
1. Paul F. Velleman @ BTF, 8/8/02, ‘Statistics: Ready, Tech, Go’
‘If technology has revolutionized the teaching of statistics, why are we still teaching essentially the same course? Most statistics courses integrate technology into the course. But often we just tack the technology onto the old syllabus… .’
2. Ginger Rowell, and others @ JSM, 8/14/02, “Our Toolbox is Overflowing: Towards a Framework for Mapping Technologies and Topics in Introductory Statistics”
‘The past fifteen years have been a period of great creativity and invention in statistics education. We have radically rethought our aims and have generated an impressive array of new tools for teaching and for doing statistics. Our toolbox overflows with reliable fine old tools and gleaming new power tools. The availability of new teaching technologies should influence the content of our courses, and the content of our courses should influence our choice of technologies.’
