STATISTICS SEMINAR: 24 MARCH 2003
The following seminar will be held at 4.00 pm on Monday 24
March in Lecture Theatre D on the top floor of the Mathematical
Institute. Tea and biscuits are available in the Staff Room 20
minutes before the seminar.
Professor David Steel (University of Wollongong)
Some Approaches to the Modifiable Areal Unit Problem
The Modifiable Areal Unit Problem (MAUP) refers to the fact that the
results of many statistical analyses of data for geographical groups
vary according to the number of groups into which a population is
partitioned and the particular boundaries used. This talk will
consider the fundamental causes of the MAUP and the implications for
analysis of aggregate data. Some ideas for tackling the MAUP through
spatial analysis methods such as semivariogram analysis will be
proposed and some initial results presented.
