Research Fellow, Department of Statistics
(Fixed term: 11 months)
Salary: £ 25,451 to £ 26,270 plus £ 2,134 London Allowance
REF: AC/02/48
The Department of Statistics is looking for a Research Fellow in the area of hierarchical models and data mining for its EU-funded project: 'Optimisation methodologies for Networked Enterprises' (ONE).
The ONE project is concerned with real-life modelling of supply chains and logistics by first collecting and analysing real data and then building validated models to simulate, forecast and optimise company supply chains. The goal of ONE is to develop an integrated decision tool to balance the optimality of logistics in terms of cost, reliability of prediction and accuracy with environmental and social impacts. The outcome is a software prototype.
The project is being run in collaboration with a consortium comprising two major automotive companies and four academic partners among others.
The post-holder will join the final year of this 3-year project and undertake such tasks as making the statistical module more friendly and understandable to non-statisticians, optimising partner networks and validating statistical models and results. This should be achieved through working with the ONE partners on case studies and revising the developed methodologies where necessary for version 2 of the software prototype.
The candidate should have a PhD and be able to demonstrate relevant research experience. They should also have excellent IT skills and preferably be conversant with Matlab, SPLUS and C/C++.
The Research Fellow will work with Professor Henry Wynn within an increasingly strong research environment in theoretical and applied statistics. There are possibilities of continued appointment beyond this EU contract.
