UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD
Postdoctoral Research Assistant:
Methodology and Analysis for the Human Haplotype Map Project.
Salary: RS1A Scale: UK Pounds18,265 to UK Pounds 27,339.
The Mathematical Genetics and Bioinformatics Group at the University of
Oxford is one of three internationally to be funded by The SNP Consortium
to work on the analysis of the proposed human haplotype map. A postdoctoral
position of 3 years duration, to work on the development of analytical
methods, and their application to the data being generated by the project,
is available immediately.
The human haplotype map (HapMap) is a major ($100M) international
collaborative effort to catalogue the patterns of genetic variation, and in
particular association and linkage disequilibrium, in the human genome.
It is anticipated that the HapMap will provide a vital tool in subsequent
efforts to understand the genetic basis of common human diseases.
Applications are invited from researchers interested in working in this
area: one of major importance in modern genetics and giving rise to
interesting and challenging modelling, computational, and statistical
problems, and data at a scale previously unknown in population
genetics.
Research experience or a background in either modern
computationally-intensive statistical methods, or population genetics,
would be preferable, but applications may be considered
from those with relevant quantitative, modelling, and computational
skills without such background who are strongly committed to moving
into this field. We envisage the postholder combining methodological work
with analyses of the HapMap data, as it becomes available, and other
relevant
data sets. The appointee will work under the direction of Professor
Peter Donnelly and Dr Gil McVean, and in collaboration with other
colleagues in the group.
The Oxford group is one of the largest (currently seven faculty members
and 16 postdocs), and strongest internationally, with particular expertise
in the development of methods for the analysis of data documenting
genetic variation in populations. Well-qualified successful applicants
are likely to be appointed at or near the top of the salary scale given
above.
