DIRECTOR
CLINICAL TRIALS CENTRE
THE FACIAL SURGERY RESEARCH FOUNDATION - SAVING FACES
Applications are invited for this exciting new position leading the CLINICAL
TRIALS CENTRE of the FACIAL SURGERY RESEARCH FOUNDATION - SAVING FACES.
This National Centre supporting Facial Surgeons throughout the UK is a new
initiative. Its aim is to address the lack of prospective, randomised
clinical trials in oral and maxillofacial surgery and to improve the
evidence base for this speciality. The trials will focus on preventive as
well as treatment strategies. The disorders studied will mainly, but not
exclusively, include head and neck cancers, facial injuries, and deformity.
The trials centre will be based at St. Bartholomew's and The Royal London
Hospitals and their associated Medical School.
The Centre is funded by the charity THE FACIAL SURGERY RESEARCH FOUNDATION -
SAVING FACES (FSRF) which was founded in June 2000 to support national,
collaborative, multi-centre studies. Its research committee, which includes
a Nobel Laureate, a senior medical ethicist and a former President of The
British Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, has already brought
together a group of highly skilled UK surgeons who are prepared to
participate in such studies.
We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who will relish the challenge of
guiding and co-ordinating these surgeons in their studies and who will
develop and define the Centre from its inception. No prior knowledge of oral
and maxillofacial surgery is necessary but candidates must have extensive
experience in running large multi-centre clinical trials including writing
successful grant and research ethics committee applications. A substantial
publication record and detailed understanding of funding from major grant
giving bodies and industrial organisations is essential.
The Director might come from any of the disciplines central to the work of
the FSRF Clinical Trials Centre: epidemiology, social science, statistics,
or surgery provided s/he has the appropriate skills and experience as
described above.
MAXIMUM GRADE: Senior Clinical Research Fellow (£52,640-£68,505)
or Academic Related Research Scale IV
(£39,394-£45,338)
CONTRACT LENGTH: Five years renewable with one year initial
probationary period
This post holder will initially be supported by 2 part time Data Managers in
the Clinical Trials Centre but a fundamental role of the Director is to
obtain project grant research funding from other agencies which will lead to
increased staffing levels in the Centre.
The successful candidate will be offered an honorary academic contract with
the medical school of Barts and The London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine
and Dentistry at a level commensurate with their CV and previous posts.
