PhD studentships in Epidemiology & Public Health
We seek highly motivated applicants, with a degree in a relevant discipline,
for PhD projects in the Departments of Epidemiology & Public Health and
Infectious Disease Epidemiology. Examples of potential PhD projects are at

Two Medical Research Council (MRC) PhD studentships are available starting 1
October 2003. Please note that eligibility for student stipends is
restricted to candidates who are 'ordinarily resident' in the UK. Candidates
who are 'ordinarily resident' in other European Union countries may be
eligible to have their tuition fees paid but will need to find funding for

Enhanced student stipends may be available for successful candidates.
Closing date for MRC PhD studentships: 28 February 2003. We welcome
applications from self-funded candidates which may be submitted at any time.
We also have ESRC recognition for PhD studentships and welcome applications
from candidates with an interest in social statistics, research methods and
computing in the field of epidemiology and public health. Closing date for
ESRC applications: 31 March 2003.

Our Departments currently have more than 20 PhD students and research grants
totalling ca £16 million, including leading-edge work in environmental
epidemiology, small area health statistics, statistical genetics, health and
hazard mapping, cardiovascular disease epidemiology, reproductive
epidemiology, Bayesian hierarchical modelling, GIS and exposure modelling,
trial design, vaccination strategies, emerging infections, tuberculosis,
malaria, HIV and dengue transmission dynamics and disease pathogenesis,
immune system dynamics, pathogen evolution and drug resistance.
