Supported by the ESRC
CASS is an ESRC Resource Centre hosted by
the National Centre for Social Research, the University of
Southampton
and the University of Surrey
Course Content:
This course will focus on the design and implementation of
quality telephone surveys. It will begin with a comparison of
the basic differences between self-administered (e.g., mail and
Web) surveys, face-to-face interviews and telephone
interviews, with emphasis on the telephone survey. This
comparison covers sampling design, nonresponse, the role of
the interviewer, question and questionnaire design, and
required research resources. Next, the course discusses the
specific characteristics of the telephone as a communication
medium and its consequences for survey design and
implementation. The course will highlight modern approaches
to telephone survey design, including the role of mobile
telephones, computer assisted interviewing, handling
answering machines and how to overcome the limited channel
capacity of telephone communication.
Target Audience:
The course is aimed at researchers, research managers and
research students, including those who intend to design and
execute telephone surveys, those who specify and commission
such surveys and those who analyse survey data.
