PhD position in probability & statistics
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science from the "Technische Universiteit Eindhoven" in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, has a vacancy for a PhD position in Probability & Statistics.
Project
The project focuses on gene expression (microarray) data. The last five years these large data sets have challenged statisticians and bio-informaticians to develop models and methodology for analysing such data. Typical characteristics of the data are the possible dependencies between genes due to biological interactions and the fact that the number of samples (biological tissues, repeats) is much smaller than the number of objects (genes) one wants to perform inference on.
Lately, biologists have shown more and more interest in revealing complex interactions between genes instead of the gene expression levels per se. Typically, one is not only interested in correlation between gene expressions, but also in causality: which gene (co-)regulates the other? To solve this, gene expression data need to be combined with other type of data. Bayesian network models allow for combining information from various data sources and accomodate inclusion of biological knowledge in the model. The challenge for the candidate would be to study models of genetic networks and to validate these with real data.
Qualifications
The candidate should possess a master's degree in mathematics (preferrably probability or statistics) or an equivalent degree with a strong interest in probability and statistics. Interest in biological applications in genetics is essential.
The salary is according to the "Collective Employment Agreement Dutch Universities" and runs from euro 1683 gross per month in the first year to euro 2258 gross per month in the last year for a fulltime position. The University covers the costs of publishing your dissertation.
