I'll try to play the genial host.
As the abstract below indicates, we hope to cover both research methods
and discuss the findings. The topic may well interest a wider group
than just students of economics and political science. Researchers may
wish to attend to see how software was applied to a small but complex
dataset. The analyses were carried out using a combination of Stata and
SPSS - if only for cross-checking the calculations.

Title: How UK Governments divide your money
Presenters: Dr Maurice Mullard (Dept of Social Policy)
Mr Allan Reese (Graduate School)
Friday 28 November
Graduate School Seminar Room
12.15 to 1.45pm
Abstract:
Government departments each plan an annual budget and have lengthy
wranglings with the Treasury to get as much money as possible. Spending
is, in theory, driven by policy priorities. Looking at the actual
spending for the past forty years suggests a very different process,
with an internal momentum that in the short term at least is resistant
to both political desires and external constraints.
The seminar will cover the process of analysis applied to
these multivariate time-series data and the conclusions drawn. The
interpretation of such data relies upon an understanding of the
strengths but also the limitations of mathematical models, and the
incorporation of political and historical knowledge.
