"STATISTICAL PERSPECTIVES ON PISA"
Further insight into the PISA study: what do International comparative
data on schooling outcomes really tell us?
Termed by some as the 'World Cup of Education' and the most comprehensive
International survey ever undertaken, this new 3-yearly study surveys the
knowledge and skills of 15-year olds in the principal industrialised
countries. PISA has set out to assess how far students near the end of
compulsory education have acquired the knowledge and skills needed to
apply themselves to real life problems and fully participate in society.
It has also sought to provide evidence on student performance in reading,
mathematical and scientific literacy, revealing the factors that influence
the development of these skills.
"Statistical Perspectives on PISA" is directed at policy makers and a
general audience with interest in statistics and evidence-based policy.
Our panel will review the methodology used by the surveys and evaluate
their interim findings. Confirmed speakers are:
Professor Harvey Goldstein (Institute of Education)
"Some Statistical Assumptions in PISA - A Re-analysis"
Professor Margaret Brown (King's College London)
"Assumptions Behind the Testing of Mathematics Internationally"
Dr Nicholas Sofroniou (Educational Research Centre, Dublin)
"An Irish Perspective on PISA with National and Comparative International
Data"
Steve Leman (Analytical Services: Central Economics and International,
Department for Education and Skills)
"PISA's Validity for Policy Analysis"
