Two Research Associates are required to work on a project looking at the
changing health status and health needs of older people, comparing England and
the USA, as part of the Epidemiology for Policy Group led by Dr David Melzer.
The work will involve analysis of information from the English Longitudinal
Study of Ageing (ELSA) and its sister study, the US Health and Retirement Survey
(HRS). Candidates should possess a relevant degree, have a good understanding of
quantitative research methods, the ability to manage large datasets and
experience of statistical analysis using packages such as SPSS or STATA.
Candidates will also be expected to contribute to the publication of results.
Proposed start date: 1 January 2004.

SENIOR RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

A Senior Researcher in Genetics Policy is required to work on a research
programme which sets out to clarify regulatory options for the evaluation of
genetics tests for clinical use.
The postholder will be expected to undertake a relevant literature review, to
conduct interviews and to assist in the facilitation and conduct of focus
groups. He/she will also be responsible for drafting the final report and any
interim documentation required by the project. The applicant should have a
higher qualification (master's degree or doctorate), with a training in
biological sciences, preferably with some understanding of basic genetics, and
with proven research experience in science policy, health services policy or
political science. Experience with the pharmaceutical or biotech industries
would be an advantage. He/she will be conversant with interview techniques and
with a basic understanding of qualitative research methodology. Proposed start
date: as soon as possible. (For appropriately qualified people who do not yet
have sufficient experience in a senior role, it may be possible to make an
appointment on the Research Associate scale - £18,265-£27,339.)
