Am I right in thinking that the RSS was going to look at mailing lists and
newsgroups as part of its review (last year?) on information/communication
systems? Did anything ever come of this?
Crispin.

Subject: More about Allstat Discussions
Following the message I posted yesterday entitled 'Allstat Discussions' I
would like to clarify that I would very much like to hear from Allstat
subscribers who like the 'status quo', as well as those who would like to
see some change/ developments. I obviously realise that this is not a
legitimate survey, but I would hope to get as unbiased a view as possible
of the overall pattern of feelings - so, if you are happy for things to
remain as they are, I would be grateful if you could take a few seconds to
let me know.
I have received a lot of responses already, the vast majority supporting
the sort of approach I was suggesting (a parallel group for discussion
about queries initially posted to Allstat) and/or even changing Allstat to
being a 'discussion' list itself (something I did not propose, since I
would hope to keep the maximum number of people happy). Some even said
that, although they probably would not use it, they would favour the
existence of a parallel discussion group.
Interestingly, several people also volunteered feelings of unhappiness
about job adverts and/or meeting announcements being posted to Allstat -
even though I suspect that a good few (and certainly the 'founders')
probably regard that as one of the main raisons d'être of the list.
I look forward to hearing further views and comments (directly to me, not
to Allstat, please :-)
Kind Regards,
John
