Dear all,
The next meeting of the South Wales group of the RSS is on Wednesday 15th
October. It will be held at the cinema , Welsh Assembly Government, Cathays
Park, Cardiff at 5:00pm (4:30pm for tea).
This seminar consists of a series of short presentations presenting different
statistical issues in the MoD:
Suicide among males in the UK Regular Armed Forces
Dr Nicola T Fear
Suicide among the UK Armed Forces is currently a topic of intense media
interest. DASA have previously produced two reports on this topic, both of
which compared the UK Armed Forces with the UK civilian population. These
earlier analyses have recently been updated; all analyses were restricted to
male personnel aged 16-54 years, combine coroner-confirmed suicides and open
verdict deaths and make comparisons with the UK civilian population based on
data from 1992-2001.
The Cleansing Project
Ian Gouldbourne & Richard Cable
DASA is supporting the Defence Logistics Organisation's Cleansing Project to
validate item data on MOD's main stores systems. Exact and fuzzy matching
techniques are being used to check whether items on individual stores systems
appear on the master NATO list. Sampling was used to enable the business to test
the accuracy of potential matches before accepting the process.
Forecasting fuel prices
Dave Watts
MOD needs to forecast petroleum-based fuel prices in order to ensure
appropriate financial provision and planning. DASA's development of the
forecasting methodology and the "accuracy" of the resulting forecasts will
be described.
All are welcome. Please contact me if you want any further details or
directions.
