The Cambridge Seminar on External Examining
Quality & Practice
Madingley Hall, Cambridge
Thursday 11th - Friday 12th September 2003
External examining requires a wide variety of expertise, from that relating
to the examiner's subject area, through technical aspects of student
assessment, to sophisticated interpersonal and management skills necessary
to resolve complex and often sensitive situations. Not unexpectedly, the
White Paper encourages formal training for this rôle.
This Seminar is designed to act as an introduction to external examining for
those who are new to it and an opportunity for more experienced external
examiners to reflect on the process. It comprises a comprehensive
opportunity to plan and reconsider the technical, practical and
interpersonal aspects of external examining as a key component of the
professional practice of Higher Education.
The Seminar will involve:
* Preparatory review of individuals' issues and concerns (by
telephone)
* The use of case studies to generate and explore the major issues in
external examining
* Inputs regarding national expectations, codes of practice, and
UK/other experience
* A simulation exercise to enable reflection on the options,
implications and choices surrounding key external examining matters
* The development of a code of practice, and action planning for
forthcoming individual external examining activities
