Developing Tutor Skills for Student Centred Learning
Tuesday 25 March 2003
Bonhill House, London EC2A 4BX
George Allan, University of Portsmouth, is facilitating this workshop based
on his work on student centred learning which was supported by a BEST
Development Award and a Learning & Teaching Grant from the University of
Portsmouth.
In 1997 an experimental group of students were taught a unit on "Advanced
Project Management" at Master's degree level using the SCL method. The
assessment results were significantly above those previously achieved with
the traditional lecture paradigm. Further research refined the SCL method
and it has now been applied to postgraduate and undergraduate level courses
in Project Management. Student feedback expressed consistently high levels
of positive feelings and praise for the way this method of teaching/learning
had them interested, involved, motivated and made them think for themselves.
Further developments have been made incorporating the use of WebCT.
This work was carried out with students studying Project Management but the
skills required are not subject specific and the workshop should appeal to
anyone with an interest in developing students as independent learners.
This will be an interactive workshop providing an opportunity to explore and
develop an understanding of what is involved in introducing Student Centred
Learning and helping students become independent learners.
The characteristics of Student Centred Learning, what is involved for the
student and what is involved for the tutor will be explored. Interactive
sessions will focus on the learning skills that students need to develop and
the teaching skills required by tutors. How do these differ from those used
in conventional teaching and learning?
The workshop will run from 9.45 - 16.00. A booking form can be downloaded
from the BEST website and a programme will be available shortly.
