Hi everyone
not sure if people have heard about this event, although in does clash with
the dates for the Include 2003 conference, London - details of this
conference at www.hhrc.rca.ac.uk
Conference: Achieving Accessibility for all A major conference will be held
on 27/28 March 2003 in Nice, France, examining how the establishment of
standards can help to widen access to a variety of modern products, services
and environments for all - for young, old and people with disabilities or
special needs. The event, entitled 'Accessibility for All', is being
organized by the three European Standardization Organizations (ESOs) - the
European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for
Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and the European
Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). It is part of their common
action plan to meet the objectives set by the European Commission's eEurope
initiative. The programme will cover the application of the ESOs' standards
in areas ranging from construction design, ergonomics and transport services
to intelligent homes and telecommunications. The event will help mark the
European Commission's European Year of People with Disabilities in 2003. The
European Commission is asking for ideas to change things for people with
disabilities - whether at home, work, at play, in school or elsewhere. This
conference will highlight areas where the ESOs are making a significant
impact on accessibility in many aspects of modern life, as well as those
where standardization is still required. The event is being funded by the
European Commission under its eEurope initiative, which seeks to bring the
benefits of the Information Society to everyone in Europe, and is offered
free of charge to delegates. The conference will cover four aspects of
accessibility for which the ESOs are developing standards:
-- Accessibility on the move (accessible transport services, ticketing,
mobile communications, technical aids etc)
-- Accessibility at work (accessible work places, man-machine interfaces,
products and services at work)
-- Accessibility in public places/services (buildings, user interfaces for
public services etc)
-- Accessibility at home ('smart houses', services in the home such as
healthcare, security, entertainment) The speakers will examine the barriers
preventing accessibility for people with different kinds of disability, the
various regulatory initiatives launched to improve the situation, and the
importance of standardization in ensuring that the requirements of
particular types of people are catered for. In addition, the concept of
Design for All will be explained, and there will be presentations
introducing products and services designed to widen accessibility by
accommodating specific needs. The conference will present the achievements
of standardization to date and will also trigger new activities by
identifying additional requirements for standardization. The event therefore
represents a unique opportunity for interested parties to explain their
specific needs and influence future work to improve life for those with
special needs. Details of the conference workshops and a registration form
is available at: www.etsi.org/cce <http://www.etsi.org/cce
