I see by the www.nsnet.org Web site that it is a Canadian site and some of
the symbols' meanings may clash with symbols already used over here. I like
the wheelchair symbol on the site as it is positive rather than static and
helpless, but the one for access to low vision looks too much like a person
using a walking stick, much like the Tourism 'Category 3' symbol.
There has been some work done on a 'common visual language' by Chris Hill of
the Geodata Institute of Southampton University, but they have encountered
many problems in this precise area. I think that there is certainly a case
for opening a debate around symbols per se to ascertain whether the symbols
we have are accessible, appropriate and carry the right information, and
whether devising new symbols that require learning etc. could be the way
forward.
