Hi everyone
I received this which may interest some of you. The deadline is fairly short
at 21-2-03. Seems like a good idea, shame about the name of the Institute.
regards

Collection of relevant references for the Bibliography on literature in
relation to Design for All
On behalf of the European standardisation organisations CEN, CENELEC
and ETSI we would like to invite you to contribute to the creation of a
Bibliography containing relevant literature regarding Design for All.
The Bibliography is a part of the Mandate 283 on safety and usability of
products by persons with special needs given by the Commission of the
European Communities. The primary target group for the Bibliography is
anyone actively working with standard production.
The purpose
Accessibility for all is gaining higher acceptance in all society,
including the standardisation world. The Design for All concept is a
central element in this context. It implies that products are designed
in such a way that people with the widest range of abilities have access
to them and can use them in a safe and convenient way.
Mandate 283 comprises three major tasks:
* To prepare a guidance document
* To set up a mechanism to make sure that the guidance document is
actually used
* To review existing standards in view of possible amendments in
the context of the guidance document.
A guidance document has been produced, CEN/CENELEC Guide 6 "Guidelines
to address the needs of older persons and people with disabilities when
developing standards". This guide addresses relevant aspects relating to
the needs of older persons and persons with disabilities to be
considered when drafting standards. The guide is technically identical
with ISO/IEC Guide 71.
The Bibliography will provide a list of more detailed information on
accessibility related to specific topics.
The categories we have chosen are: Healthcare; Personal care and
protection; Personal mobility; Housekeeping/household equipment;
Furnishings; Machinery and tools; Handling products and goods;
Communication, information and signalling (ICT); Buildings and
interiors; Outdoor environment; Traffic and transportation; Recreation;
General information on accessibility and ergonomics.
The Mandate will finance a print version of the Bibliography. There has
been a proposal to develop a web-based database, where all relevant
references are easy to access and find for the target group and which is
easy to update from anywhere in Europe. However, since this cannot be
financed by the Mandate, we are trying to find alternative financial
support for such a database.
We have developed an input form for the references which can provide a
basis for both the print and (future) web-based database. This means
that not all of the information in the current input form will be
accessible in the print version.
Practical information
We would like you to fill in the input form - one for every reference
you want to submit. The input form can be found as a link at the bottom
of this email.
In order to make the Bibliography as extensive and adequate as
possible, we will also ask you to pass this e-mail on to all relevant
persons in your country who might contribute.
The target date for submitting references is the 21 of February 2003.
If you experience any problems completing the input form please
