I found messgen (I meant to mention), and it's in the repository already
[1] (took under an hour to autoconf last night, and that included adding
new autoconf macros).
It would certainly be sensible to use that.

There are indeed no .msg files in /stardev/sources/{sae,par,fio} (for
example). Where _do_ they live, and would it be sensible to check them
in now?
