David,
Just in case it hasn't been explicitly thought of, is there going to
be an element in the ESODataProcessing bid for attendance at meetings,
and other visibility things?
The AG2 bid has an element for web presence -- should we have
something similar? Say 0.5 SY over the project duration?
In another bid I'm reading, there's a discussion in the `management
plan' of a hierarchy of telecons, AccessGrid meetings, and face-to-face
meetings. I don't imagine we want all that, but it does look rather
serious and thought-out (entirely illusory, I happen to know, but that's
not the impression it gives) and funding for some cut-down version of
it might be worth adding to the ESO bid. It also mentions funding for a
meeting to conduct a yearly conference to disseminate the project's work.
Ought we try to get funding for a workshop or something -- perhaps even
the postgrad summer schools which were mentioned at the T&I SSG last
autumn -- to disseminate to the astronomical community the tools we're
proposing developing.
Most importantly, though, it goes on to say `... To this end our PDRAs
should attend international meetings such as the Global Grid Forum,
GridLab Workshop, etc. The Project Scientist will coordinate attendance
at such meetings to ensure that the project receives the attention of
interested parties and the PDRAs learn from the progress made by other
similar projects elsewhere.' Given the perceived success of the IVOA
meeting, this is probably a Good Plan, so that perhaps the ESO bid should
ask for rather more travel money than required for just a few trips back
and forth to Garching.
See yez,
Norman
