On the E-SO bid, we shall need a good echelle reduction package. I'm
concerned that ECHOMOP falls below the line in Tim Naylor's estimation
despite being the Carlsberg of echelle reduction. On the development
side we need to make ECHOMOP support data errors.
> should we have some ESO data users in this bid for advice
If this bid includes optical interferometry, we should be looking for
partners who can supplement Derek's interferometry knowledge and add
some science, and features of such a reduction package.
In general it's a good move to show that we're not making this up to
keep our jobs, but it will be highly beneficial to the UK ESO-using
community. They can provide highlights of the astronomy rationale for
using VLT, and particular instruments. I should write that news item
soliciting input from asrtronomers on the priorities for future ORAC-DR
work today. It may identify potential astronomers, if it does raise
a few responses.
We need to identify the right astronomers. They need to be senior, yet
Starlink friendly. Some stronomers will see our bids as rivals to their
own, ignoring the benefit of our bid to themselves.
