Subject: VOTable and FITS
I'd like to bring to the attention of VOTable gurus a discussion, mainly
between Martin Hill of ROE and myself, on the AstroGrid Forum site
http://forum.astrogrid.org/read.php?TID=420 on which comments from this
group would be welcome.
I hope people won't be put off by the thread title "VOTable is bad". In
my most recent posting I have put forward a half-baked idea to overcome
various limitations with both FITS and VOTable. In essence I suggest
using MIME or DIME to encapsulate an XML-based header with an efficient
binary tail section, which could be FITS binary or something similar.
The XML header could, obviously, be entirely compatible with the current
VOTable, or could also use the facilities of BinX or DFDL to describe the
data.
For those who don't mind taking a few seconds to register, I'd suggest
comments should also go to the same thread on our forum (all welcome, no
obligation to purchase). For those who still prefer email, comments can
go on this list, I suppose.
Regards
