Scottish Music Summer School
Director, Rob MacKillop
The Wighton Centre
Dundee Central Libraries

Saturdays from 5 July
10am-4pm with an hour for lunch at 12

Week 1 - 5 July The Music of Scotland ~ Rob MacKillop
For non-musicians as well as musicians. Rob MacKillop presents a day of Musical Discovery. With recordings, live performances and handouts, Rob will introduce the historic music of Scotland from the Bronze Age, through the medieval Celtic monks, Robert Craver, songs of the Renaissance Court, traditional music, and pibroch, to contemporary classical composers of the last fifty years. This is a great chance to get an overview of the entire history of Scottish music in one day. Rob MacKillop is a well-known performer and researcher of Scottish historical music, who has performed and lectured internationally on the subject. Rob hails from Dundee - the City of Musical Discovery!

Week 2 - 12 July Scottish Traditional Song ~ Alison McMorland and Geordie McIntyre
For singers and non-singers. Alison and Geordie have traveled the world performing and lecturing on Scots Song. The have recorded quite a number of CDs and are well-respected researchers and educators. The day will consist of illustrated lectures and sing-along sessions, introducing you to the breadth and considerable depth of Scots Song from the medieval period to the present. Beginners welcome.

Week 3 - 19 July Scots on the Fiddle ~ Mary Anne Alburger
For fiddlers and non-fiddlers. Mary Anne Alburger is the author of 'Scottish Fiddlers and their Music'. This daylong workshop will be split into two parts. In the morning session, Mary Anne will discuss (with performances and recordings) the origins and development of the fiddle in Scotland. The afternoon session will be 'hands on', as Mary encourages you to get out your fiddle and explore some of the lesser known but highly important airs and graces of our fiddle heritage.

Week 4 - 26 July Dundee Guitar Festival

Week 5 - 2 August Guitar - Lute - Cittern ~ Rob MacKillop
For guitar, lute and cittern players (of all styles and instruments) and non-players. Rob MacKillop traces the origins of plucked-fretted-instruments in Scotland from the medieval period to the present. If you think the guitar arrived in Scotland in the 1950s with Skiffle - think again! In the morning session, Rob will lecture on the history of the guitar, lute and cittern in Scotland, and in the afternoon session, players will learn how to play some of these ancient airs and dances on their modern instruments.

Week 6 - 9 August Pibroch ~ Barnaby Brown

For pipers and non-pipers. Barnaby Brown has researched the origins and development of pibroch (piobaireachd) - arguably Scotland's most unique contribution to World musical culture. Hear a wide range of pibroch styles played on Barnaby's 18th-century pipes, learn canntaireachd and through singing, discover the art of memorising, composing and understanding this rich Gaelic musical language. The complex world of ornaments and phrasing will be explored, and Barnaby will aid participants in the composition of a new pibroch: Wighton's Wake-up!

Week 6 - 16 August Harps and Clarsachs ~ Bill Taylor
For harpers and non-harpers. The internationally respected performer and researcher, Bill Taylor, will take you through the fascinating history of Scottish harp and clarsach. This daylong workshop will be split into two parts. In the morning session, Bill will discuss (with performances and recordings) the origins and development of the harp and clarsach in Scotland. The afternoon session will be 'hands on', as Bill takes you through some of the lesser known but highly important tunes, techniques and ornaments. Some instruments are available for use, and beginners are welcome.

All workshops are open to all ages. You can bring along an instrument (or voice) or just sit and observe.
