RARE BOOKS IN SCOTLAND
An opportunity for Scottish librarians who have responsibility for early
printed collections to come together to discuss matters of common interest.
The Rare Books staff of the National Library of Scotland would be pleased
for librarians in Scotland who have responsibility for early printed
collections to join us on Wednesday 3 September 2003, in the Board Room, in
the Library's George IV Bridge building.
The provisional arrangements are as follows:
10.00-10.30 Coffee
10.30-12.00 A programme of short talks and discussion on areas of
activity offering possibilities for further collaboration: for example,
collection development (including disposal), recording of locations of
pre-1701 Scottish books ("Aldis"), recording Scottish holdings in ESTC, how
to celebrate 500 years of Scottish printing in 2007 or 2008
12.00-14.00 Buffet lunch. This long lunch break has been provided to
facilitate informal discussion. Tours of the Library's George IV Bridge
building will also be available, 12.00-13.00 and 13.00-14.00
14.15-16.00 After a welcome by Martyn Wade, the National Librarian, Dr
David Shaw, Company Secretary, Consortium of European Research Libraries,
will speak on "The European printed heritage: using the Hand Press Book
database and the CERL Thesaurus,"* followed by an informal session at which
visitors will be able to use the database and Thesaurus [this presentation
about the CERL Hand Press Books file, organised by the National Library of
Scotland in association with the CILIP Rare Books Group, is also being
advertised as a separate event open to librarians from outside Scotland]
There will be no charge, but those wishing to attend are asked to register,
providing name, institution, position/responsibilities, and contact details,
