Come and find out more about ICLG Scotland and XML at the same time!
Date: 6 February 2003
Venue: Mitchell Library Glasgow
Time 5.00 p.m.; ICLG meeting from 3.30 p.m.
Our next event, to be held on 6 February at the Mitchell Library in Glasgow,
is entitled 'XML for the terrified'. Our speaker is Alan Poulter of the
Graduate School of Informatics at the University of Stratchlyde.
XML is an acronym that seems to be appearing everywhere. It also can seem to
be proposed as the solution to a large number of information problems in
many different domains (not just information provision). But what is it?
This interactive course will take participants with no knowledge at all of
even simple markup languages (e.g. HTML) to be able to grasp what XML is and
how XML developments might be relevant to their work. It will not be a
lecture-only session but will involve practical activity (paper- not
computer-based) on the part of participants.
ICLG - the Industrial and Commercial Libraries Group - exists for all
librarians and information specilaists working in speical libraries and
information centres. Before Alan's talk, at 3.30 p.m, we will be having an
informal get together for any one who would like to find out more about the
group or volunteer for the committee. We are currently looking for feedback
as to what services our members require from CILIP Scotland; this is an
exciting opportunity to have your say! Committee meetings are held (in
theory) quarterly, but because of distance we try to communicate by email
where possible.
We hope to continue next year's programme with a talk from Duncan McKay on
financial planning. The new edition of Duncan's book, Effective financial
planning for library and information services, published by Aslib, will be
available shortly.
