Dear Rob
I use N type thermocouples for recording most of my iron furnace.
They have an upper limit of about 1300 as long as the atmosphere
isnt too oxidising (about 1200 in air).
They are readily obtainable through various suppliers. I use RS
components (http://rswww.com/), who can supply a 3mm dia
300mm probe (stock code 219-4652) at £17.13 + VAT (I use these
for embedding in the furnace wall). You will need an appropriate
digital thermometer to use it of course. I also use some 1m probes,
which RS don't seem to do - I got mine from H&B Sensors (01243
866866). You may also need to buy separate connectors - the N
type mini connectors from RS are 219-4854 socket and 219-4832
plug at around £2 each, depending what comes on the end of the
leads.
Hope this helps
Tim
