Dear List,
An appeal for assistance!
I represent the Combe Martin Silver Mine Preservation and Research Society, in Combe Martin, North Devon.
Each year, around Easter over 3 or 4 days, 5 or 6 members have for several years visited other historical mining areas - Forest of Dean - Cornish Tin Mines - as examples. I have been asked to organise a 'fossick' (Cornish name for a visit, so I am told) in 2004 for members. As an ex Derbyshire lad - (Matlock Bath and the Masson and Cumberland systems, Bonsall and Riber were my stamping grounds in the 1950's) - I am 'pressed' to organise something in that Derbyshire area.
Is there anyone up in 'God's Country' who could assist me in this endeavour? I am thinking along the lines of a visit to the Matlock Bath Mining Museum, visiting various mines in the area, even Hopton Wood limestone mine if it still exists etc.
Unfortunately, although in the 50's & 60's I lived at Matlock Bath and Bonsall (even worked for Derbyshire Stone at Matlock), I have rather lost touch with the Derbyshire 'setup'.
Anyone who could assist me setup a fossick, please contact me off list.
Kindest regards,
Trevor Dunkerley.
