Could your 'Cans' be for 'Powder', ie to carry Gunpowder underground to the
place of work.
As a long time researcher on the Moonta Mines area of South Australia, I'm
interested to know if you came across the mention of Moonta's Famous 'Cap'n
'Ancock' [Captain Henry Richard Hancock] who did his early training at the
Devon Great Consuls Mines?
