John Wilcock's reply to Roger Gosling's query mentions that "I see no reason why the cavern effect should not work for mines; indeed Mongo Gill Caverns (a lead mine) in Yorkshire were detected by dowsing". Except that Mongo Gill is a cave intersected by lead mining, that statement is correct - dowsing had shown a series of voids which were later linked to become Mongo Gill North. The dowser in question was Caleb Wade (otherwise Tojo from his uncanny resemblance to the former Japanese leader) and he wrote a paper called "Divining" in Transactions 1960-61, Vol.1 No.1, of the Northern Cavern & Mine Research Society, pp.12-22.
He concluded that: "... it is realised that this is a controversial subject and that the phenomena appears uncanny to to those unused to it, but a definite attempt has been made to put it to a good use for speleology. Those concerned with the projects described cannot be said to be unbiased, nor can the results be said to be conclusive so the matter is left open for further more conclusive evidence."
