Try Knight's Technical Encyclopedias. I have a partial set of 1878, which was presumably intended for an Anglo-American market, as its got engineering stuff in it relevant to both localities, eg: boat lifts on the Grand Western Canal versus the Brooklyn Bridge! I seem to recall its got stuff on this sort of thing in it, but can't check immediately as I've lent them out to a friend. You should be able to find them in an American library/technical institute.
