IA Recordings - produced a special video presentation at the recent NAMHO
Conference - the title being Land of Poets, Scholars and Mines. Price £12.99
inc UK postage and packing. (It is also available in American Format )
Running time 47 minutes - available from either myself or via
www.iarecordings.org
The video was designed as an introduction to Irish Mining and to highlight
those sites where there were either lectures or visits on the surface and
underground. It provides a tours of both surface and underground remains and
provides the viewer with real armchair exploration.
The true atmosphere of the Irish Mines is captured not least of which is the
allure of the Man Engine House at Allihies which is in my opinion is the
jewel in the crown of Irish Mining Remains the rest of the engine houses and
underground is not neglected either. Not to be outdone though is the superb
Williams Engine house at Avoca which is one of the best preserved Engine
house Buildings the Chimney having recently been repaired, the other engines
houses and the 850 yard level provides a view of a different mining methods
used on this site. The mines at Silvermines, Tankerstown, Bunmahom,
Glendalough and Glendasan are also heavily featured.
One of the main highlights is the Working Mine at Tara, in County Meath
which shows all the working practices , equipment in use and in addition the
final processing mill including separation process which are included.
There is a well written commentary which guides you through the various
sites and scenes and to complete the atmosphere pleasant Irish Music is used
in the background. If you have any interest in mining or Ireland then this
is definitely worth having.
IA have also produced a number of other videos on Ireland which are all
still available
Glengowla - which explores Ireland first show mine
The SCMC in Ireland - which is a 90 minute compendium of mines visited in
1995
12 mines of Ireland is a 31 minute selection of the previous compilation
with an added commentary.
