The Northumbeland Liddle was Colliery agent to Lord Carlisle During the
around the 1830's &40's. IF my memory serves me he worked also for the Dudley
estates at one time, he was also involved in The Duke Of Bridgewaters enterprise
at Worsley.
Whilst Lord Carlisle's agent he put up great opposition to the Newcastle and
Carlisle railway. Favoring the rout utilising Stationary steam engines rather
than Locomotives. Without the weight of George Stephenson himself, the
stationary engine route would have got the go ahead. There is a bit of info on his
history contained in a publication on the 'Canal Duke'.
