Greenwell was manager of the Radstock collieries from 1854 to 1863. Before
that he had been at Marley Hill (which I think is in Staffordshire or
Cheshire) for a number of years.
In 1855 he discovered iron ore at Westbury in Wiltshire and soon after
became one of the directors of the Westbury Iron Co, later supervising the
sinking of the company's pit at Newbury. One of his fellow directors was
Stephen Steeds who was proprietor of Mells and Vobster collieries around
this time. This involvement with a potential business rival resulted in a
reprimand from Lady Waldegrave which was delivered by Liddell.
In 1863 he became manager of Lord Vernon's collieries at Poynton, although
he returned to Radstock on a number of occasions to conduct surveys of the
collieries.
"The Autobiography of George Clementson Greenwell" (London: The Quarry
Publishing Co, 1899) gives a full account of his life if you can find a
copy.
