The next monthly meeting of the London and Southern Counties
Minerals Industries Branch of the Institute of Materials (a long-winded
title which translates to a thriving remnant of the former Institution of
Mining and Metallurgy) is due to be held at 6 p.m. on 10th June in the
Institute of Pathologists building, No 2 Carlton House Terrace, London
(for those who might wonder what the pathologists have to do with it,
this is the next-door building to No 1, the Institute of Materials HQ, and
a room is available at that time in No 2, but not in No 1).
The "talk" is to be by Paul Deakin, a former mining engineer now
turned professional photographer, and his slide show will, reportedly,
cover many (mostly former) metalliferous and mineral mining operations
in the U.K.
For a time, when I was editor of Mining Magazine, we ran, in conjunction
with International Mining Consultants, an annual photographic competition
for photgraphs of mining operations by people working in the industry.
Paul Deakin won first prize more than once, with some striking underground
shots. Since then, I gather, he has turned professional as a photographer,
so I think this promises to be a good show.
You don't have to be a member of the Minerals Industry Branch of the
Institute to come along -- if you can manage to come, come as a guest.
