Hi Trevor and List
"Slickensides" are facings (ie lines of minor fracture) in the coal seam
associated with some geological stress (usually from faulting ) Faulting in
itself increases the liability of any coal to spontaneous combustion
because the coal is weakened and when close to being mined (ie as the
working faces approach) it will break up and expose more of its surface area
and also allow ingress of oxygen.
A most complicated subject..
Regards
John

Dear List,
After much discussion regarding the above subject, I wonder if list users
could enlighten me a little more regarding 'slickensides' which also seem to
have had 'explosive' characteristics.
Any info. gratefully received.
Kindest regards,
Trevor.
