Slightly off the subject of mining, but does anyone know what might have been meant by 'furnace ash' in the folowing context. It was purchased from Exeter at 2s per quarter for use at the lead/silver smelters at Calstock in 1304-7. It was washed by the women dressers, either before or after use. I would be grateful for any informatioon or ideas.
