If the mobile winding thread is still active there is a very large and
mobile winding truck at the Mines Rescue Station in Mansfield which can get
to the bottom of Boulby (1300m). It is in active use and ready within
minutes to go anywhere. It is regularly used to test emergency procedures on
site at a number of collieries as well as at Boulby.

Subject: Mobile emergency winding equipment.
Roger - I think in short, yes, although I have absolutely no knowledge of
what a 'Gaping Ghyll type winch' is like.
The mobile apparatus had to be able to lift a heavy steel 'skip' or bucket
carrying possibly two men plus the length of rope. It was provided with a
signalling system and a telephone. We had to connect the normal shaft
telephone system to the mobile winder and unfortunately the mobile winder
telephone was not compatible inasmuch as it was not an 'intrinsically safe'
telephone so we had to replace it with one that was.
If the machine that I am referring, or more probably its replacement, is at
Ellington, then a much better description may be forthcoming. I am relying
on my memory from about forty years ago.
Alan Vickers.
