Adrian,
My great grandfather and his father before him was a 'knocker up' in Oldham, Lancs.
They were employed by the local cotton mill to carry out this service and after knocking up the workers went on to work in the mill. My Great great grandfather was a Scot by the name of Duncan, part of the Robertson clan who moved to Lancashire with the woollen trade. I understand that the family name now - Dunkerley - came about by my great great grandfather being called 'the early Duncan' which became Dunkerley, or Duncan the early.
Regards,
Trevor
