Dear List
The subject of aerial ropeways is something I have always been fascinated by and yet have come across very little reference to any study or recording of. Here in the Cleveland Ironstone field quite a number were used and little is left to show where they operated.
There were quite extensive remains of several blondins at Pen-y-Orsedd slate quarry during the 1980's. This is in Snowdonia at NGR SH 506540, just north of Nantlle.
Remains of aerial ropeway pylons from a small copper mining operation still remain in Cwm Bychan near Beddgelert, SH 604476.
Back in England, the only ropeway I know still working is at Claughton, near Lancaster. It appears to bring clay down from a hillside quarry some mile and a half away to a brickworks, crossing over the A683 in the process. Just south of it is a second one which appears to have been disused for some time. Both are marked on the 1:50,000 OS map. Located at SD 562664.
Simon.
