21,125 pounds per annum (Pay Award Pending)
The Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Unit based at the Thanet Campus of
Canterbury Christ Church University College has recently won European Union
funding to implement Europe's largest schools GIS and multimedia project (The
Dakini Project).
The Dakini project will establish the first cross border (UK/France)
geo-spatial web server for schools that would hold high quality map based data
of the Interreg IIIa (EU funding source) region (Kent, East Sussex, Nord Pas
de Calais, Seine Maritime and Somme). This would include a variety of digital
data, including; aerial photography; large and small scale maps;
administrative boundaries with census, social and economic data; historic
maps; satellite images; environmental data; and 3D Digital Elevation Models
(DEM). In addition, the site would also host a series of unique Digital
Information Portal's in the form of virtual tours for a number of key sites of
cultural, social, economic, historical and geographical significance in the
Interreg IIIa region.
The project requires a GIS technician to manage and collate this significant
data set as well as to develop and construct 3D 'fly-throughs' around the
region. The successful applicant will also help train teachers in the use of
GIS and also develop training and learning materials for the classroom.
You will report to the Dakini GIS manager and must have either a degree or MSc
in a GIS relevant discipline, with at least 1 year's work experience in a
relevant GIS post. You will have practical experience of using ArcGIS and
ArcView, as well as Erdas Imgine's Virtual GIS. You must be capable of working
on your own initiative without immediate ongoing supervision, with highly
developed communication and interpersonal skills. Experience of training and
knowledge of French would be an advantage.
Closing date: 7 November 2003.
Salary for all posts is dependent on experience and qualifications.
