Geographic Data Analyst

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), part of the Natural Environment Research Council, aims to undertake a world-class programme of scientific research, and to sustain for the UK an active and influential regional presence and a leadership role in Antarctic affairs.

We are looking for someone to join the Mapping and Geographic Information Centre (MAGIC) to research and analyse geographical data and create new Antarctic topographic maps. By compiling new maps and developing innovative cartographic techniques as needed to integrate datasets, you will be contributing to the evolving GIS framework needed for Antarctic research. During work periods in Antarctica, you will participate in aerial photography missions and in the acquisition and processing of GPS data. Your cartographic skills will support the British Antarctic Survey's programme of topographic and thematic map production.

Although based at the Survey's premises in Cambridge, several months will be spent in Antarctica, usually on alternate years. You will therefore need to be physically capable and medically fit to work in Antarctic conditions.

You must have (or will achieve in September 2003) an MSc in GIS or Remote Sensing, a first degree in Geography or Topographic sciences, and adequate experience with ArcInfo and ERDAS software, CorelDRAW! and Microsoft Office, UNIX and NT operating systems, and graphics workstations and plotting devices. Photogrammetry and image analysis skills, an ability to document your work clearly, and familiarity with GPS receivers are other essential requirements of the post. A post-graduate Diploma in Cartography or in Land Surveying and knowledge of map design and map production processes would be an advantage.

Salary will be in the range of £16,010 to £23,350 per annum dependent on qualifications and experience. We offer a generous benefits package including a pension scheme, flexible working hours, 25 days annual leave plus 10.5 days public and privilege holiday.
