Full-time PhD studentship, Autumn 2003
‘APPLICATION OF GIS TO HABITAT PLANNING’
The Environmental Systems and Safety Management Research Group at Aston
University is offering a PhD studentship entitled ‘Application of GIS to
Habitat Planning’. This is a full-time 3 year studentship, ideally to
begin in October 2003, which will be supervised at Aston University and
externally advised by Middlemarch Environmental Ltd. The aim of the
research is to develop a methodology to inform ecological planning and
land use management decisions utilising a Geographical Information System.
To achieve this, the expert knowledge of individuals working in habitat
management and creation will be integrated into a GIS-based toolkit which
can be used for ecological planning and habitat monitoring at both local
and regional scales. Applicants should possess a good honours degree in a
related discipline (e.g., geography, environmental science or biology), or
an equivalent qualification. GIS experience is not essential, as training
can be provided.
The research area, Warwickshire, is primarily agricultural, with limited
biodiversity which is highly fragmented. Phase 1 Habitat data for the area
is already held in an ArcView GIS, and will provide the foundation on
which to build a comprehensive GIS for analysing biodiversity
opportunities, managing habitats, and ecological decision-making and
planning for the region. Such a GIS-based tool would significantly enhance
opportunities for the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust to actively address the
Warwickshire Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP). The adaptations to the GIS
may also be applicable to other contexts and test cases.
