Applications are invited for an EPSRC CASE Research Studentship "Extending
SQL - based 2D Topological queries to 3D". The Studentship is jointly
funded by the EPSRC and Laser-Scan. Commencing in September 2003, the award
carries a stipend approximately £3,000 above the normal EPSRC research
studentship level (the latter is currently £9,000 pa).
The collaborative research between UCL and Laser-Scan will focus on
efficient storage of 3D spatial information in a relational database
environment. In particular, the project will explore which areas of GIS
applications will benefit the most from efficient handling of topology in
3D and how to extend 2D SQL queries to include handling of 3D topological
relationships.
Applicants should have background in Computer Sciences, with a knowledge
and interest in spatial databases; Existing knowledge and interest in
databases and SQL; Relevant connection with UK (usually established by
residence) and a degree at 2:1 or better (or equivalent).
The project will be supervised by Dr Mordechai (Muki) Haklay, Department of
Geomatic Engineering, University College London, and Dr Tim Bevan, Laser-
Scan LTD.
Informal enquiries and more details about this project may be made to Dr
Muki Haklay ([log in to unmask]).
The closing date for applications is 2nd May 2003
