How about the overhead of a procedure call? Only with inlining (high
optimization levels and appropriate switches), can you expect the two to
be the same. I personally am pretty opposed to the "OOP" schools that
teach all direct access is bad and unprotected. Especially for arrays,
direct access is the only way to achieve efficiency, other then possibly
inlining, which is not standard anyway...
