This is system-dependent; most vendors provide a procedure to do this

The traditional way is
(1) OPEN the file
(2) CLOSE it with STATUS='DELETE'
That is not actually guaranteed to work (and indeed did not on
IBM MVS, if I recall correctly), but I think it does on all current
systems.
Alternatively, your vendor has probably provided a procedure to do this
(we certainly do), so again, check your documentation.
