No, your email application does not have to support newsgroups; that
is a misleading statement. I know lots of people whose email
application does not support newsgroups....that includes quite a few
people that I know through the newsgroups.
The application that you use to read newsgroups has to support
newsgroups (surprise). This might or might not have anything to do
with your email application. Some applications support both; other
applications support only one. Whether you choose separate or
integrated applications is a matter of personal taste.
So, no, you do not have to switch email readers in order to
read newsgroups if your favorite email reader doesn't happen
to support them.
There are also alternatives to your ISP supporting newsgroups.
As I mentioned in my other posting, my home ISP doesn't support
newsgroups (well, not acceptably). You need service from
someone who does support them. This might or might not be the
same as your ISP.
